Under the NCLB legislation, states need to identify which students belong in the ELL category and evaluate the amount of progress their ELLs have made during each school year. Many schools and districts also use additional tests throughout the year to evaluate whether their ELLs are staying on course towards achieving their annual learning goals.

When instructional decisions are being made on the basis of assessment results, getting quick access to the results is essential. This is where the IPT Family of Tests comes in. In states where specific identification tests are not state-mandated, many districts use the IPT because of its ease of administration and scoring as well as its reliability and validity. Other users choose to use the IPT in addition to state-mandated tests because of the quick results and the availability of diagnostic information from the score reports.

The IPT Family of Tests includes Oral, Reading, and Writing tests. Available in English and Spanish, the tests are used for identification, placement, progress monitoring, and/or redesignation, as relevant and appropriate in the context of each school, district, and state. The scoring of all IPT tests is immediate and simple directions on a single page within the test booklet show the student’s designation and proficiency level. The Examiner’s Manual can provide further diagnostic tools to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses to inform instruction. The IPT tests are nationally normed to the highest professional standards and aligned to the TESOL standards.
