    Henry, Joanne Landers. A Clearing in the Forest: A Story about a Real Settler Boy. New York: Four Winds Press, 1992. This book tells the story of a nine-year-old boy growing up in Indianapolis in the 1830s. It is based on the life of a real Indiana frontier family. 64 pages.

    Kellogg, Steven. Johnny Appleseed. New York: Morrow, 1988. Presents the life of John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed. The book describes his love of nature, kindness to animals, and physical strength. Charming full-color illustrations. 48 pages.

    Meadowcroft, Enid. By Wagon and Flatboat. New York: Crowell, 1938. This book tells the story of a family that moves west in 1789 by covered wagon to the frontier village of Pittsburgh and then by flatboat to Ohio. This excellent book is out of print, but may be available in libraries. 170 pages.

    Anderson, Joan. Pioneer Children of Appalachia. New York: Clarion Books, 1990. This book of photographs from a living history village recreates life in northwestern Virginia in the early 1800s. 48 pages.

    Brandt, Keith and John Lawn. Daniel Boone: Frontier Adventures. Mahwah: Troll Communications, 1989. This story of Daniel Boone traces his boyhood years when he learned the skills that would make him a leader on the frontier. 48 pages.

    Fleischer, Jane. Tecumseh: Shawnee War Chief. Mahwah: Troll Communications, 1997. This easy-to-read biography relates the life of the Shawnee chief who attempted to unite the Indian tribes into a confederacy. 48 pages.

    Hargrove, Jim. The Story of the Black Hawk War. Danbury: Children's Press, Inc., 1986. This book tells the story of the last great Indian uprising east of the Mississippi River. 31 pages.

    Immell, Myra H., and William H. Immell. The Importance of Tecumseh. San Diego: Lucent Books, 1997. This story relates the efforts of Tecumseh to preserve the way of life of his people. Includes quotes from primary and secondary sources. 112 pages.
