Olive Collection: BREA, CA – November 15, 2005 – Ballard & Tighe, publisher of instructional and assessment materials for limited English proficient (LEP) students, has announced the publication of The Olive Collection, a set of three children's literature books for grades K-5. Ballard & Tighe observes Children's Book Week with the publication of these titles, designed to engage students and strengthen their literacy skills. The theme of this year’s Children's Book Week, Imagine, centers on encouraging children, and the adults who care for them, to spread the joy of reading by spending some time with a book each day. The three titles in The Olive Collection — Miss Millie and the Marbles, The Golden Rule, and Six Dogs and a Police Officer — were written by third-grade teacher Caryn Sonberg, who was inspired to write to these charming books in honor of her grandmother, the originator of the “Olive” stories. In each book, beautifully illustrated by Michelle Dorenkamp, a spirited young girl named Olive learns an important life lesson centered on positive character traits such as honesty, responsibility, and respect for others. “These books are especially appropriate for children in grades K-5, and for English learners who are at the intermediate to advanced stages of language proficiency. However, because they reflect universal themes, the Olive books appeal to children of all ages,” said Dr. Roberta Stathis, president of Ballard & Tighe. The Olive books are included in Set 2 of Ballard & Tighe’s Carousel of IDEAS Enhanced Program. Carousel of IDEAS, 4th Edition is a comprehensive, research-based K-5 English language development program designed for English learners at all stages of language proficiency. This highly regarded program integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing with major content areas to prepare students for success in mainstream academic classes. The Olive books are also part of Ballard & Tighe’s collection of children’s literature books — 46 wonderful children’s literature books that include many award-winning titles. Priced at $6.75 each or $18.00 for the set of three books, The Olive Collection is available from Ballard & Tighe and through major online booksellers. About the Author Caryn Sonberg was born in Miami, FL and currently resides in Alexandria, VA, where she is an elementary school teacher at Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology. When she was a child, Caryn spent many summers with her grandmother, Millie. One of Caryn's favorite memories of their time together is sitting on the couch listening to her grandmother's "Olive" stories. Each fictional story about a little girl named Olive was tied to a moral lesson. Caryn wanted to record the Olive stories to keep her grandmother's tradition alive and share these important life lessons with children everywhere.
