Features of the Teacher’s Guide

On the next two pages of the chapter, you will find the chapter overview. Let’s look at the Unit 5, Chapter 1 Overview that starts on page 40 and continues to page 41. You will notice three columns in the chapter overview chart.

The first column indicates the lesson number. Each chapter includes 4–6 lessons.

The second column highlights which of the four major language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) is the focus of the lesson. In Set 1, the first couple of lessons in each chapter often focus on listening and speaking; reading and writing are integrated into the later lessons. In Set 2, many lessons integrate all four skills.

The third column outlines the key objectives of the lesson, which align with district and state English language proficiency standards. The three numbers separated by periods next to each objective (e.g., 1.1.3) correspond to the chapter number, the lesson number, and the objective number. You also will find the key objectives listed at the end of each lesson in the “Observing Student Progress” section. It is important to review the key objectives in the chapter overview chart before you begin each lesson so that you and your students have clear goals on which to focus. After you complete each lesson, review the key objectives again and check student progress.

Below the chapter overview chart you will find the Chapter Materials Checklist. This checklist helps you to identify and prepare the materials you will need throughout the chapter.

Now that you are more familiar with some of the special features of the Teacher’s Guide, you have the option of taking a Quick Quiz or moving on to the next section: Delivering the Lesson.
