Delivering the Lesson

Now let’s take a look at the first page of Lesson 1. The first section on this page is called “Establishing an Instructional Base Line.” Every chapter in the Teacher’s Guide begins with a short activity that reviews prior learning, introduces students to the topic being covered in the lesson (e.g., transportation), taps into students’ prior knowledge about the topic, and prompts you to administer the Chapter Pre-Test to see what level your students are at before you begin instruction. (The Chapter Pre-Test and Post-Test are the same test. There is space in the top right corner on the first page of each test to record the results for each administration.)

Chapters in the Teacher’s Guide contain 4–6 lessons, each with the following sections:

  • Presentation
  • Practice
  • Apply & Extend
  • Involving Family
  • Observing Student Progress

The pacing of the lessons is determined by the language abilities of the students and the difficulty of the concepts being presented.

The Teacher’s Guide makes it easy for you to deliver each lesson. Information you are to present and questions you are to ask are printed in green, boldface font. Answers to questions are printed in brackets in italicized font. Other information and instructions are printed in regular font. Lessons also provide examples of charts, graphic organizers, and other visuals that will help students master the lesson objectives.
