Welcome to the online inservice training for the IPT-Reading & Writing Tests!
Before you begin, it will be helpful if you can get a copy of each IPT Reading & Writing test
component—including student test booklets and examiner manuals—your school
has purchased. These items are for reference only and can be returned to
your testing office when you complete your training. Also, please be sure
you know which IPT Test(s) your school/district/state is using. Some use
both the Reading & Writing Tests, while others use just one or the other.
You only need to take the training on the test(s) you will be administering.
Ballard & Tighe’s IPT family of tests includes a series of norm-referenced,
standardized assessment instruments for testing oral language, reading,
and writing in English, and a separate series in Spanish. The chart below
shows the instruments that are included in the IPT Family of Tests.
This online inservice will focus on the IPT-Reading & Writing English
Tests (IPT 1, 2, and 3). At the end of this inservice, you will have the
option of linking to a supplemental, condensed online training for the
IPT-Reading & Writing Spanish Tests.

The IPT Tests provide the information you need for identification, placement,
and redesignation of English language learners (ELLs). The purpose of this
inservice is to prepare you to administer the IPT-Reading Test, Writing Test,
or both. Upon successful completion of this class, you will:
- Be familiar with the test components used to administer the IPT-Reading Test,
Writing Test, or both tests
- Understand the areas assessed by the IPT-Reading Test, Writing Test, or both tests
- Be able to administer and score the IPT-Reading Test, Writing Test, or both tests
- Be able to interpret the test results for classroom placement and instruction and
for parent-teacher conferences
This inservice training will take approximately 1-3 hours to complete.
You do not have to complete it in one sitting. This training is available to you
seven days a week, 24 hours a day, as long as you have access to the Internet.
At various points in the training, you will have the option of taking an interactive
Quick Quiz to check your learning. And at the end of the training, you will take
the Final Quiz to assess whether you have mastered the information needed to
administer and score the IPT-Reading Test, Writing Test, or both, depending on
which training you choose.
If you score at least an 80% on the Final Quiz, you will be able to link to a
completed Final Quiz to check any questions you answered incorrectly.
From this page, you will see a link to a printer-friendly Certificate of
Achievement. This certificate is worth one or two professional development
(PD) hours, depending on what portion of the training you take. Make sure
you type today’s date and your name on the certificate before you print it.
If you do not score at least 80%, you can review the course material again
and re-take the Final Quiz.
Please note that examiners must be proficient in English in order to
administer the IPT-Reading & Writing English Tests. It is critical that
the examiner’s pronunciation is clear and comprehensible. If you have any
questions about your ability to administer the IPT-Reading & Writing English Tests,
please contact your testing coordinator.
