IPT 1-Reading Test: Components and Areas Assessed
Areas Assessed
The IPT 1-Reading Test assesses the following areas of reading proficiency:
Part 1: Vocabulary –
This subtest contains items that test high-frequency vocabulary such as labels, descriptive terms, and action words.
Part 2: Vocabulary in Context –
Sentences in this section each have a missing word or words.
Students are tested on their ability to select appropriate words in different contexts.
Part 3: Reading for Understanding –
Students read a story for comprehension of details, feelings, tone,
and cause-and-effect relationships. They infer meaning from
the story to predict behavior. There are also poems to assess
students’ ability to understand figurative language, interpret meaning,
and identify the main ideas.
Part 4: Reading for Life Skills –
The fourth subtest features real-life situations such as
reading a TV schedule, map, or index. To answer the test
questions, students must apply practical, real-life skills
to note, infer, and predict from details in these situations.
Test items assess students’ ability to read for information.
Part 5: Language Usage –
The final subtest contains items to assess students' use of language.
For instance, grammatical items test a student’s ability to
discriminate and select from a number of syntactic structures,
so as to minimize miscommunication and enhance understanding.
Now that you are more familiar with the components and areas assessed by the test,
you have the option of taking a Quick Quiz or moving on to the next section –
