Pre-IPT Oral Test: Components and Areas Assessed
Areas Assessed
The Pre-IPT Oral English Test assesses four basic areas of English oral language proficiency:
Vocabulary: The vocabulary items measure a student’s receptive and expressive knowledge of basic vocabulary in English.
Comprehension: These items assess a student’s ability to understand commands, concepts, and basic facts related to stories. The questions cover both BICS and CALP.
Syntax: These items measure a student’s use of correct syntax and indicate how well he or she has mastered basic grammar.
Verbal Expression: These items integrate different aspects of interactive oral language, covering both receptive and expressive skills. They encourage students to demonstrate many language skills, such as basic oral interaction and relating stories and personal experiences in an integrative format.
The Pre-IPT Oral Test yields five score levels, A-E. The specific skills being assessed at each test level are described in the Examiner’s Manual in a chart entitled Content of Test Items Chart. A sample from this chart is shown below.

Note the numbers next to each item on this chart. These items represent the number of the test question in the Test Booklet. The Content of Test Items is essentially a “bird’s-eye view” of the test. By referencing this chart after administering the test, you are able to begin the process of evaluating a student’s strengths and areas that need improvement.
Now that you are familiar with the test components and the areas assessed by the test,
