Welcome to the inservice training for the IPT I- and II-Oral Tests! Before you begin, it will be helpful if you can get one copy of each IPT Oral Test component—including student and examiner materials—your school has purchased. These items are for reference only and can be returned to the testing office when you complete your training.

Ballard & Tighe’s IPT Family of Tests includes a series of norm-referenced, standardized assessment instruments for testing oral language, reading, and writing in English, and a separate series in Spanish. The chart below shows the instruments that are included in the IPT Family of Tests. This inservice will focus on the IPT-Oral English Tests. At the end of this inservice, you will have the option of linking to supplemental online training for the IPT-Oral Spanish Tests.

NOTE: If you are interested in learning how to administer and score the Pre-IPT, we recommend that you complete the online training for the IPT I Oral Test, read the Examiner's Manual for the Pre-IPT, and then do a Pre-IPT practice test. When you are finished, please call your Ballard & Tighe educational sales consultant with any questions.

The IPT Tests provide the information you need for identification, placement, and redesignation of English language learners (ELLs). The purpose of this inservice class is to prepare you to administer the IPT-Oral Tests. Upon successful completion of this class, you will:

  • be familiar with the test components used to administer the IPT-Oral Tests.
  • understand the areas assessed by the IPT-Oral Tests.
  • be able to administer and score the IPT-Oral Tests.
  • be able to interpret the test results for classroom placement and instruction and for parent-teacher conferences.

This inservice training will take approximately 1-2 hours to complete. You do not have to complete it in one sitting. This training is available to you seven days a week, 24 hours a day, as long as you have access to the Internet. At various points in the training, you will have the option of taking an interactive Quick Quiz to check your learning. And at the end of the training, you will take the Final Quiz to assess whether you have mastered the information needed to administer the IPT-Oral Test. If you score at least an 80% on the Final Quiz, you will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement worth two professional development (PD) hours. You also will have an opportunity to review a completed Final Quiz to check any questions you answered incorrectly. If you do not score at least an 80%, you can review the course material again and re-take the Final Quiz.

Please note that test examiners must be proficient in English in order to administer the IPT-Oral English Tests. It is critical that the examiner’s pronunciation is clear and comprehensible. If you have any questions about your ability to administer the IPT-Oral English Tests, please contact your testing coordinator.
