IPT I-Oral Test: Administration

Test Environment.
The test should be conducted at a table in a quiet, non-threatening area that allows for individual testing. As with any standardized test, there should be no surrounding noise or activity.

Testing Time.
The IPT-Oral Test is simple to administer and takes an average of only 15-20 minutes per student. Testing time depends on the language ability of the student. Two main factors considerably shorten the test for most students:

    1) If a student makes too many errors on a given level, you will stop testing.
    2) Students whom the teacher knows are strong in oral English may start at a higher level in the test, eliminating the need to test on the earlier sections.

Student Starting Levels.
Please note that ALL students who have limited oral English skills start at the beginning of the test, regardless of their age or grade level. However, starting levels are designated by grade level for students who have basic oral English skills. This information is detailed below the Designation Chart at the end of the Test Booklet and in the Examiner’s Manual.

Please note that if you are new to administering the IPT Test, or if you are not sure whether the student has basic English skills, you should always start at the beginning of the test.
